Mexican Road Signs

For those who don’t know any Spanish, some of the road signs on Mexican highways can be a bit confusing, even though most of the signage is combined with imagery that is fairly consistent wherever one travels in the world. Some signs, though, are posted only in words.

Below is a short glossary of some of the more common signs and signals seen in Mexico, with their respective translations from Spanish to English, as well as some of the graphic signage with meanings.

Alto – Stop

Area de Descanso – Rest Area

Calle Sin Salida – No exit / Deadend street

Camino Cerrado – Road closed

Camino Sinuoso – Winding road

Carril Izquierdo Solo para Rebasar – Left lane for passing only

Caseta de Cobro – Toll booth

Ceda el Paso – Yield

Cierre su Escape – Close your muffler

Conceda Cambio de Luces – Dim your lights

Curva Peligrosa – Dangerous Curve

Desviacion – Detour

Disminuya su Velocidad – Reduce speed

Entrada y Salida de Camiones – Trucks entering and exiting

Entronque – Junction, or intersection

Escuela – School / School zone

Estacionamiento solamente para emergencias – Emergency parking only

Grava Suelta – Loose gravel

Hombres Trabajando – Men at Work

No Deje Piedras en el Acotamiento – Don’t leave rocks on shoulder

No Rebase con Raya Continua – No passing with solid line

Parada OR Paradero – Bus stop

Paso Restringido – Restricted access

Peligro – Danger

Poblado Proximo – Populated area

Principia Tramo en Reparacion – Road work begins

Prohibido el Paso – Entry Prohibited

Proximo retorno a 2 kms – Next turnaround 2 kms.

Puenta Angosto – Narrow Bridge

Reduccion a Dos Carriles – Road narrows to two lanes

Reduccion de Acotamiento – Shoulder Narrows

Salida – Exit

Semaforo en Operacion – Traffic light ahead

Se Usara Grua – Towaway zone

Si tome no maneje – If you drink don’t drive

Tope – Speed bump

Tramo en Reparacion – Road work, Road under Repair

Transito Lento Carril Derecho – Slow traffic keep right

Un Solo Carril – One lane only

Vado Peligroso – Dangerous Dip

Zona de Derrumbes – Slide area
