Mexico City – Day Without a Car

Special Information for Driving in Mexico City – “Hoy no Circula

Mexico City and Federal District (D.F.), to minimize pollution, has a program called “day without a car”, or “Hoy no Circula“. One day per week, depending on your license plate number, you are subject to large fines for driving your car and possible impoundment. If the following numbers match the last number of your license plate you should not drive on that day.

The HOY NO CIRCULA program is in effect in Mexico City from Monday through Saturday. Sundays are free from restrictions unless special continencies are announced via the local public media. Further information can be obtained by calling LOCATEL at 5658-1111

HOY NO CIRCULA Hours: 5:00 a.m. to 10 p.m. for private cars, and from 10:00 a.m. to 10 p.m. for public transport (taxis, microbuses and buses from the D.F. and the state of Mexico)

License plate terminations and the day and color that corresponds to each:

  • 5 and 6 Monday – yellow
  • 7 and 8 Tuesday – pink
  • 3 and 4 Wednesday – red
  • 1 and 2 Thursday – green
  • 9 and 0 Friday – blue (also applies to vanity plates without numbers and special permits)

Saturdays, beginning 5 July 2008:

  • First Saturday of each month: 5 & 6, yellow
  • Second Saturday of each month, 7 & 8, pink
  • Third Saturday of each month, 3 & 4, red
  • Fourth Saturday of each month, 1 & 2, green
  • Fifth Saturday if applicable: 0 & 9, vanity plates and special permits, blue

Exemptions:

Cars with holograms 0 or 00 issued by the Government of the Federal District or the state of Mexico, or those which have undergone Voluntary Verification from other states or the exterior have obtained the 0 or 00 hologram as a consequence.

Cars with holograms 0 or 00 from the states of Hidalgo, Puebla, Queretaro or Morelos on plates from their respective states (Voluntary Verification from other states are not possible in these entities)

Vehicles used for medical services, public security, fire stations, rescue, civil protection and urban services; those which run on electricity, authorized school transport services, hearses and funereal vehicles giving that service, authorized disabled transport having the proper identifying plates, and those of the Federal Transportation service for the transport of passengers.
