The Church “Cristo Jesus de Petatlan” is situated in a lush setting surrounded by trees adjoining the town square, the gold market and street market in downtown Petatlan.  Though not a historical or colonial style, the church boasts some beautiful stained glass and well manicured grounds.  People travel from many miles away in search of miracles which are believed to be performed for the faithful in this Catholic Church.

The Gold Market in Petatlan is directly across the street from the main entrance to the church.  These friendly people sell a wide variety of gold jewelry by the gram but be prepared to bargain to get the best price available. Wandering through nearby Petatlan street market, with stalls piled high with fresh fruits and vegetables, clothing and general housewares, will give you a taste of the old Mexico markets that were once, and still often are, the center points of smaller towns and villages all over the country.

Near Petatlan is the Soledad de Maciel archaeological site, also known as “La Chole”, with a small, locally-established museum and guides who will take visitors to site itself, which is only recently beginning to be more extensively excavated by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History.

As an added attraction to the area, every year in October, the nearby town of San Jeronimito, located just before reaching Petatlan from the Zihuatanejo direction, hosts a white-water rafting event that has become internationally known and attended.
