The south-central state of Guerrero is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the south, the state of Michoacan to the north-west, the states of Mexico, Morelos and Puebla to the north and Oaxaca to the east and south-east. It’s center of government is the state capital of Chilpancingo.
The main cities and communities in the state of Guerrero are Acapulco and Ixtapa Zihuatanejo (including Troncones) located on the Pacific coast, and Taxco, Iguala and Chilpancingo, located in the mountainous interior of the state.
Tourism is one of Guerrero’s prime industries. In the 1940′s and 50′s, Acapulco came to the forefront as a destination of the rich and famous of Hollywood and experienced great growth during that era and into the 1960′s. In the early 1970′s, the Mexican government slated Zihuatanejo for another touristic development and Ixtapa was born. Taxco de Alarcon grew up as a silver-mining town during the days of Spanish colonization and brings a steady tourist trade attracted to the quaintness of it’s colonial architecture and streets as well as the fine craftsmanship of its silversmiths.
