Borda Gardens Lake
Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico
The Borda Gardens are named for the builder of the residence, Don Jose de la Borda. Surrounded by moss-covered walls, the splendid gardens, shaded paths and refreshing fountains and pools form a cool refuge within the core of the city. In 1865 Emperor Maximilian of Hapsburg and the Empress Carlota selected this spot as their summer home, hosting elegant galas and receptions.

It was Don Jose’s son, Manuel, who performed the landscaping and layout of the gardens, importing trees and plants from distant parts, earning it the classification of a botanical garden. Don Manuel designed the fountains and pathways and in 1783 inaugurated the ornamental lake that supplies water to the gardens.
Manuel de la Borda was also the constructor of the Guadalupe Chapel, a domed church built in 1784 next to the gardens themselves. The cupola of the Church is visible from within the walls.
Located on Morelos Avenue No. 103, across from the Cathedral, the Borda Gardens are open to the public on Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
A small museum is located within the grounds near the entrance to the gardens displaying exhibits of manuscripts, artifacts and photos of the era.
