The State of Sinaloa lies along the Pacific coast of Mexico and the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California), with an area of some 59,000 square kilometers and a coastal extension of approximately 650 kilometers. The state is bordered by Sonora and Chihuahua to the north, by Durango to the east, and Nayarit to the south. The low-lying coastal areas are run through with rivers, and down along the eastern half of the state stretch the foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental.

Culiacan, Sinaloa’s capital, lies in the lush central area of the state, and is an important business and economic hub for the region.

Sinaloa is an important supplier of agricultural produce and is known as the “breadbasket of Mexico”, providing close to 1/3 of Mexico’s total produce. Its harvests include corn, wheat, beans, sugar cane, tomatoes, cucumbers, squashes and melons, amongst many others. The state is also host to a large number of shrimp and fish farms along its coast, as well as being the country’s most important source of offshore shrimping.

Destinations and Activities

Sinaloa’s main tourist destination is Mazatlan, a popular beach resort area on the southern coast of the state. Los Mochis, on the lower coastal plains of the northern stretches of Sinaloa, and El Fuerte, a quaint colonial town close to the foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental, are the gateways from the west to the impressive Copper Canyon region of neighboring Chihuahua via the Chepe, or Chihuahua al Pacifico Railroad. Other points of interest include El Rosario for colonial architecture and bathing resort; Topolobampo, an important commercial port; and Teacapán with its pristine beaches and eco-tourism opportunities.

With its abundant rivers, extensive coast line and varied terrain, Sinaloa offers a range of outdoor, aquatic and eco-tourism activities such as surfing, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching and snorkeling. There are several decent surfing breaks at the far reaches of Mazatlan’s northern beaches as well as other points farther outside of town to the north.
