Surfing Chiapas

The State of Chiapas is not a state that is well known for its surfing — certainly nothing like Baja, Michoacan, Guerrero or Oaxaca – yet there are reports of good surfing breaks along this coastline at certain times of the year.

Puerto Arista

Puerto Arista is located 17 kms from the town of Tonalá, near the Oaxaca – Chiapas border. Reports have come of some very good surf from this region, consistent and with 5 ft faces off a sand-bar break.

Puerto Madero

Puerto Madero area has several breaks, mainly for more experienced surfers. The port itself is located on Highway 225 out of Tapachula. Going north from Puerto Madero to the series of jetties is a spot known as Bolas that’s easy to get to, is very quiet as far as crowds are concerned, and where you can catch excellent quality, hollow, right waves over a sandy bottom at low and mid-tide with swells from the south.

Playa San Benito

It is said that San Benito break, near the residential area of Playa Linda at Puerto Madero, is the best for surfing in this area, but weekends finds this beach chock-full of beachgoers. Make sure you get out there early.

Barra de San José and Barra de San Benito

These two other Puerto Madera area beaches are also on the local surfers lists as good breaks and worth a try. Barra de San José is about 27 kms from Mazatán, with some great seafood restaurants to boot.
